Yoga was something I had tried in the past but not something I’d really thought about for the tribe. Recently we took miss 5 for her first yoga class at Decorati Kids in Wetherill Park, and found ourselves really happy with the benefits she got from it.
It was a calming environment
It had been a busy week, leading into school holidays so all of that end of term craziness going on at school so it was really nice to slow down and let the kids enjoy a quiet, calming yoga class at the end of the school day. The lights were dimmed in the room, the kids were given yoga mats and asked to take their shoes and socks off and you could literally see how peaceful and calm they all were.
It was a great stretch for their growing muscles
Kids always amaze me with their flexibility and what they can do. You assume they’re still too little or certain things might be too complex for them but even as a kindergartener, my daughter sat quietly and paid attention to the yoga instructor and gave everything a try. I was amazed when the instructor asked me after the class if she’d done yoga before and told me she was really good at it.
The kids gained some spacial awareness
It’s important for the kids to spread out and have their own space so they can execute the yoga moves properly without falling or bumping into their neighbour. They were all evenly spread out and were considerate of their fellow classmates when putting their mats down ensuring they each had enough room to do the class comfortably.
They enjoyed themselves
There is nothing competitive about yoga – it’s not about who is better at it and there’s certainly no winners or losers. Instead, the kids could take the time to focus on themselves and push themselves to their own limits. They had a giggle at some of the positions and their cute names – the ones my daughter recalled were of course cat and dog themed. But I asked her if she would do yoga again and she said “Yes – I’d love to come back and do yoga next week. Can I? Can I?”
