If you haven’t yet heard of the ‘Rocks’ game getting tribes outdoors, then you must be living under a rock. Only joking – we only heard about it yesterday. But it’s got us excited and eager to go on a rock hunt! Read on to find out how your tribe can play too!
What is it?
Some genius decided to start the game, encouraging tribes to go and find some rocks out in nature, then paint them and decorate them, seal them and do what is called a ‘Rock Drop’ somewhere where tribes are likely to stumble across them. It could be a park, playground, nature reserve, think of all the places tribes like to hang out!
How can my tribe find rocks?
There are dedicated Facebook groups in each state where you can join in on the fun. Members post pictures of their decorated rocks and tell others where they’re dropping the rocks. Once a tribe has found the rocks, they take pictures and post in the group saying ‘Found Rocks’ so others know the rocks have been claimed. If a tribe who hasn’t yet heard of the game finds the rocks – the extra clever idea to get the rock droppers to paint the name of the Facebook group they’re members in on the back of the rock means the tribe can go and look up the group and start playing the game too!
What we love about it
This fabulous game is equally fun for the rock droppers as it is for the rock finders. The rock droppers get to spend some time creating their masterpieces on their rocks then finding fun places to hide them. It’s a lovely way to teach the kids all about paying it forward. It also encourages tribes to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors.
If we want to drop some rocks, how do we paint them?
Good question! The experts on the rock pages have advised the best thing to do is to wash and dry rocks and use either acrylic paint or Sharpies to create your art on your rock. Then use a sealer spray to ensure the rocks survive out in the elements with their new designs. Also be sure to write the name of the group you’re a part of and you advertised your rock drop onto the back of your rock.
There are loads of Rock dedicated groups on Facebook depending on where you’re located. Start by typing the word Rocks into the search bar and see what comes up, or try searching by state such as NSW Rocks or WA Rocks.
