Have you paid a visit to the Australian National Maritime Museum with the tribe recently? They have so many fun activities and events on for kids, there’s something to do during the week for pre-school aged kids, on the weekends for families and in the school holidays.
During our recent trip to Sydney in the school holidays – we decided to check out the Australian National Maritime Museum and were so glad that we did! With our family entry ticket Miss 4 got to participate in the fantastic activities offered by the “Kids on Deck” program. It was so well organised and we were warmly welcomed by two staff who explained all of the activity options to us. The theme was the “Roman Empire” which compliments other exhibitions throughout the museum.
Here’s just some of the fun things to keep the little ones busy – it was suitable for all ages!
- Lego table
- Puppet theatre and dress ups
- Archeological dig
- Air drying clay, with gold leaf + glitter to decorate
- Bubbles
- Make a diorama
- Printing, painting and drawing

On every day of the school holidays. 10am – 4pm.
Entry is free with any paid museum admission.
There’s a cafe right next door, spots to park your prams, overlooking the water and ships, plus there’s a fantastic under 5s play area within the museum.
There’s loads of fun to be had on weekends during school term too including the upcoming Family Fun Sunday’s on August 20. This event runs twice a term with live performances, film screenings, character tours and face painting.
The itinerary includes:
- Visiting working harbour vessels
- Harbour Hoots Family Tours with Captain Scuttlebutt
- Climb up the Cape Bowling Green Lighthouse
Finally there’s the popular Mini Mariners events specifically for 2-5 year olds with lots of different themed events running throughout the year. During July there is a W is for Wildlife event where the little ones can enjoy touch tours creature specimens and August is Pirates Ahoy month where kids can follow a treasure map around the museum to find the secret treasure cave.
